I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that, not since the invention of television has audio been more important as a media form. The rise of podcasts over the last 20 years means that more and more people get more and more of their information purely in audio format, (or so this podcast says). And, despite the fact that some great podcasts consist almost entirely of two knowledgeable people talking about something, there are other podcasts (such as this favourite of mine) which are almost closer to a dramatisation than a documentary.
In this context I think it’s important that students learn a bit about how they can structure audio to tell their own stories. In learning this, they also learn how others use audio to manipulate their audience. In short, media education acts as a protective factor against manipulation by the media.
So, this is the motivation behind my workshop at the Apple Education Community Summit in Sydney this year. In the workshop we will:
- Talk quickly through the why of audio storytelling
- Learn how to set up a GarageBand project for creation of an audio story
- Understand the importance of defining an audience and intention at the start of any media production
- Discuss Creative Commons licensing and the importance of respecting intellectual property
- Play with a GarageBand project, manipulating a reading of Jabberwocky by Lewis Carrol (public domain)
The Keynote deck and the GarageBand project that we will use in the workshop are attached. And if you feel like playing along at home, here’s a video showing what we’ll do in the session.

Thanks Eric for posting this marvelous and informative GarageBand workshop! It certainly gave me some answers about voice recording on GarageBand that I had been looking for. Storytelling is such an important skill for students and you’ve shown us how to use it effectively with GarageBand in this well organized Apple Education Community Summit Workshop
