Creative thinking is a challenge for many students in my class (and school). My school has had such a focus on direct explicit instruction, learning intentions and success criteria, that creativity is a little lost. We are also a high performing academic school, so there is pressure for exemplary results to be maintained. Students seem perplexed when given choice and require constant affirmation and direction. It is important to be comfortable with the creative process, and the longer time it may take in comparison to a “traditional” task. As students become more confident to take risks and share their learning creatively, their level of engagement and understanding will deepen, and they will probably be quicker to get started next time. There’s nothing better than students sharing a creative project that they are deeply invested in and proud of. Which skills does your school need to build in their learners to prepare them for the future?
