Searching for the One Story to Tell

Storytelling is a process and can be an arduous undertaking for me at times.  There’s a lot I’d like to say as my head sometimes feels like it’s in an endless spin cycle with little to no output.  In early July, I had the privilege of joining many of my Canadian ADE colleagues at the ADE Academy, where I attended a storytelling session led by Dr. Shawn Lennie to further develop my skills in this area.  I gained valuable insights from this workshop and encourage you to explore this forum for perspectives from other attendees and resources shared by the session leaders.

The given tasks and reflections aimed at simplifying the storytelling process by challenging us to find the one story worth telling.  During the Academy, I tried to find that one story to share.  I turned to one of my personal passions - photography - and asked myself, why do I take so many photos? I crafted my story and chose video as the medium to convey it.

Spoiler alert:  I’m not there yet as evidenced by my video, yet this is part of the process. It’s about risk taking and seeking constructive feedback.  I tried to post this video prior to leaving the Academy, but the buzzer sounded and life continued.  My family vacation is over, the new school year has begun and now it’s time to share and ask for your suggestions.  Not looking for positive feedback, just constructive (polite) feedback :)

Thank you for taking 22+ seconds to view my video.  It’s not great.  Dr. Lennie said several times to stay in the suck, however, I don’t think this is what he meant by it :)

I will continue to reflect and hone my storytelling skills to share those stories worth sharing.

First, kudos to you for taking the risk and creating and sharing your story video. The camera sound at the beginning captured my attention for sure! It may add to the effect by making the shutter sound match the changing of the pictures. I also like the interactive graph showing a representation of your data. On the graph it says "Reviewed" as the middle category and your audio says "Consumed". It may help clarify to your viewers if they match.

Honestly though, I wouldn't beat yourself up. Had you not specifically asked for constrictive criticism I wouldn't have picked out a couple of things to suggest. Your story is powerful in a short amount of time. I for sure think you should share more of your story and pictures!
