We would like to share yet another story of our international music making and teaching collaboration with our students. Nisreen and Donnie are both Apple Distinguished Educators, class of 2023 (best class ever!) Although our content area is music, this idea can easily be applied to any area.
Nisreen Jardaneh is a piano teacher and special music educator. She spreads joy of music making through music lessons in her studio, online and through workshops in the community. Donald "Donnie" Sorah is a music professor at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise where he teaches a variety of courses including music composition.

Project Goal: Produce a multimedia project on Glimmers or Favourite things. Students ages were from 7-12 years old. We worked in four sessions. Here is a summary of each session:
Session 1: I introduced music concepts on beat, melody, and texture. Students explored the use of liveloops in recording music and recorded their first edition.
Session 2: We went through compositions and had a general discussion with some guided feedback. Students then worked on editing and improving compositions. These compositions were sent to professor Donald Sorah at UVA Wise University for feedback.
Session 3: Students went through the feedback from Donald and his students and edited the compositions. They exported their music to iMovie and started editing with Green Screen, using titles, backgrounds, and filters.
Sessions 4 : We did the final editing touches on the music and the video editing. At the end of the session, we watched the videos and celebrated with muffins!

My students and I were thrilled to collaborate on these composition coaching sessions once again this year. When I received Nisreen’s students’ projects, I shared our goals with my composition students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. I gave some background, since only one student had participated in our collaboration last year. The students were eager to join this project and quickly offered positive feedback and suggestions for improvement on each project. This collaboration not only supports young composers in their music-making endeavors but also provides excellent opportunities for my students to practice giving feedback to fellow composers, enhancing their teaching and coaching skills in the art of music composition.

Absolutely wonderful collaborative project! Creative for both the students and teachers. This is a good example of how more of us might reach out beyond our school walls to expand our student’s learning. Thanks for sharing!
