In our Grade 2 classroom, we have a learner who is still developing his phonics and writing skills, yet has a wealth of ideas to share. Earlier, when asked to write about the skeletal system, most of his thoughts were lost as he focused all his energy on spelling and sounding out words.
We wanted his learning to shine through without being limited by his current writing abilities. That’s when we introduced him to the microphone feature in the Notes app on iPad.
The result was incredible. He spoke his ideas aloud, watched them appear as text, and realised he could share his understanding just like his peers. This boosted his confidence and allowed him to focus on content instead of the mechanics of writing.
After recording, he copied his points onto paper—giving him meaningful writing practice—and proudly walked around the classroom sharing the number of facts he had listed about the skeletal system.
When we shared this with his parents, they were amazed. They could see how technology didn’t replace learning, but became a bridge—helping him express his knowledge, build writing skills, and feel empowered as a learner.
With the iPad, every learner finds a voice, and every idea finds a place.
