Fostering Writing Independence with Keynote

I created a Keynote support tool for Year 4–6 learners to foster independence in writing and reduce barriers related to spelling attempts.

Using the NZ Essential Word List, slides are organised alphabetically, allowing students to find words using their knowledge of initial sounds. They can tap, highlight, and use the “Speak” feature to hear the word aloud and confirm it’s correct. Audio instructions also guide students who may find reading directions challenging.

Students can also add their own words using the Speak to Text feature. The last slide gives students a chance to practise their encoding skills, moving buttons as they say each sound aloud before writing the word in their books.

Feedback from the students has been positive. It’s exciting to see how multimodal supports, such as Speak to Text, Speak Selection, and Audio Recording, can reduce barriers and foster independence in their writing attempts.

I’d love to hear your feedback on this tool, any ideas for expanding its use!
