“Programming Dreams in Mexico: Children Creating Solutions with Swift”

Since 2023, I have encouraged my 6th-grade students in Mexico to begin learning programming with Swift, using Apple’s App Design Workbook. Through this process, students identify real-world problems in their environment and seek innovative solutions through code. Along this journey, I have witnessed surprising ideas turn into meaningful challenges, where the creativity and critical thinking of these young programmers shine as they build unique and engaging solutions.

I have been able to closely follow several impactful projects, including an app to support people with hearing impairments, another to classify clinical studies, an app to support responsible pet care, and most recently, a project by a student who identified a challenge faced by an exchange student and seeks to help them integrate into our culture through helpful tips, basic vocabulary, and a virtual pet with whom they can express their emotions. I have been deeply impacted by the immense creativity of children and the authentic way they approach problems to design thoughtful solutions.

Throughout this process, I have been supported by @sabina225, who has consistently invited my students to events from the “Programadores Swift México” initiative, led through LDC @learningdc along with her outstanding team. Thanks to these spaces, even though my students are not yet eligible to officially participate in the Swift Student Challenge, they find forums to share their ideas, stay motivated, and inspire others to continue programming. We will continue working so that, when the time comes, they can fulfill their dream of submitting their apps.

Desde 2023 motivo a mis estudiantes de 6.º de primaria en México a iniciarse en la programación con Swift, utilizando el Cuaderno de Diseño de Apps de Apple. A través de este proceso, los alumnos identifican problemas reales de su entorno y buscan darles soluciones innovadoras por medio del código. En este camino he sido testigo de ideas sorprendentes que se transforman en grandes desafíos, donde la creatividad y el pensamiento crítico de estos jóvenes programadores brillan al crear soluciones únicas y divertidas.

He podido dar seguimiento a proyectos muy significativos, como una app para apoyar a personas con problemas auditivos, otra para clasificar estudios clínicos, una app de apoyo para el cuidado doméstico de las mascotas y, recientemente, el proyecto de una estudiante que identificó un problema en un alumno de intercambio y busca ayudarlo a integrarse a nuestra cultura mediante consejos, vocabulario básico y una mascota virtual con la que puede expresar sus emociones. Me ha impactado profundamente la enorme creatividad de los niños y la forma tan auténtica en que abordan los problemas para proponer soluciones.

Durante todo este proceso he contado con el apoyo de @sabina225, quien constantemente ha invitado a mis estudiantes a los eventos de la iniciativa “Programadores Swift México”, encabezada a través de LDC junto con su gran equipo. Gracias a estos espacios, aunque aún no pueden participar oficialmente en el Swift Student Challenge, mis alumnos encuentran foros donde compartir sus ideas, motivarse y motivar a otros a seguir programando. Seguiremos trabajando para que, cuando llegue el momento, puedan cumplir su sueño de inscribir sus apps.
