I have never been Creative until owning Apple iPad and Pencil

My creative journey has been ups and downs. I never actually feel creative until the day I receive my first Apple iPad (original) and testing Garageband the first time.

NOTE: A while ago actually I did use older Macintosh and learn to type and draw pixel art. This old Macintosh experience is truly something.

That is not all of course, I eventually got iPad and Apple Pencil and start drawing using the Pencil -- this is the key of creativity. I am more or less visual person. I do take a lot of photos using iPhone since 5s.

However, I do think that Garageband and the right MIDI controller, and making random music is another step in the right direction to be creative. I do eventually find Koala Sampler app and many other instrumental apps that I use all the time.

Eventually of course I learn "a little bit of coding". It's still pretty difficult, but you learn a bit eventually that could help you to do things useful. Maybe you use Processing, some Python, and maybe make simple app using Swift actually coding or even just vibing with AI to code, it's amazing actually.

Some people might just use Shortcuts and make simple workflow, but this is also requires some imagination and creativity.

Some of my tips to be creative :

  1. Draw and doodle a lot!
  2. Take lots of photos, documents everything.
  3. Make random music.
  4. Write down ideas.
  5. Observe everything around you
  6. Exploring and follow tutorials
  7. Experiment and make things
  8. Share you creation and ideas

Don't be afraid with "limitations", in fact being constrained with limitations is key to realizing you can go beyond that limitations even with simple tools: like pencil and paper.

I realize at some point that "being creative" does not always equal able to earn money for living. But being creative and going through the creative journey (learning process and exploring) is truly something about being human. The learning process has been a lot more streamlined in the past few years with the availability of YouTube, social media, Tiktok, etc. Finding the right tutorial for learning has always been pretty interesting.

Learning, teaching, exploring ideas, writing it down, it's keys for being creative. And creative involves trials and errors.

One huge key in my journey is to have Apple computer able to run Blender 3D open source. I think that's also a big leap and I wish Steve Jobs can use Blender in Mac Mini today. Still not able to run Blender on iPad and Vision Pro, but maybe one day.
