What are your learners creating for Media Literacy Week?

October  23 - 27 (2023 - United States) is the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) Media Literacy week.  I love that our Northern California  KQED public radio station education outreach is focusing the week with the theme of “Students as Media Creators” not just as media consumers and providing some wonderful ideas to enhance student voice.

Also there are so many creative ideas here in the Apple Education Community that educators can use for engaging learners in creating Media Literacy focused projects.

A Challenge Based Learning activity would also be a excellent way to underscore Media Literacy:

Big Idea - Media Literacy:

  • Engage: Develop a challenge and essential question around Media Literacy
  • Investigate: Research, analyze, define, & refine questions and challenge
  • Act - on a solution by creating media around the topic of Media Literacy for a broader audience.

Cheryl,

Great idea to incorporate Challenge Based Learn in this topic. We’ve been working on determining valid media resources to use for research currently. I can see doing something on this topic.

Hi Cheryl,

We don't have a Media Literacy Week over here, but it sounds like a great initiative. We have Safer Internet Day in February. Ireland has a government-funded resource https://www.webwise.ie that provides advice for schools on Digital Citizenship.

This video is excellent and just one of many available on their YouTube channel and website. Lesson plans and storybooks for children are available on the website.
