As educators, we know that the technical skills our students learn are crucial to their success, but I believe it’s equally important to prepare them for the challenges they’ll face in their personal lives and careers. That’s why, at Z1 Hair Studio Academy, I’ve integrated mental health awareness and financial literacy into our cosmetology curriculum.
Why? Because many of our students are young adults entering a fast-paced industry, and learning how to manage stress, maintain a healthy work-life balance, and make smart financial decisions is just as vital as learning to style hair or apply makeup.
In my classroom, we discuss strategies for managing mental health in a high-energy environment, building emotional resilience, and staying financially empowered. From budgeting as a freelancer to navigating the mental demands of working in a customer-service-driven field, these are topics that shape our students' long-term success.
How are you incorporating life skills like mental health or financial literacy into your curriculum? What challenges do you face when teaching these topics alongside your core subjects? Let’s share our experiences and ideas to better support our students in all aspects of their lives.
