Vocabulary, Syntax and Morphology for ESOL in SL Shorts Clips Reels

As part of my ESOL and Tier 2/3 support I am facilitating our Pods at Whakarongo School to adapt learning for ESOL ākonga. Often when we embark on inquiry learning through creative exploration or conceptual curriculum our ESOL students can find it difficult to understand and use new vocabulary. They also have difficultly with short vowels and pronouns such as he, she, they and I. This places them at a disadvantage when it comes to increasing their understanding of vocabulary, syntax and morphology.

Using SL Shorts Clips Reels can enable these students to have regular practice at home and school. Their families can have easy access to the SL Shorts Clips Reel and concepts their children are learning. Often ESOL children of migrants and refugees have a higher level of English than their parents. Using Apple Clips can provide these families with direct access to the learning of their tamariki. It provides a creative and more importantly equitable access to Structured Literacy learning for the whole family.

I'm looking forward to collaborating with our Pods in Term 2 to increase ESOL students reading fluency, vocabulary, simple syntax and morphological understanding. The example I am sharing is for our younger Year 1 to 3 ESOL ākonga.
