Title: Mitosis Motion Graphics

Grade level: 7th Grade Science

Time Required: Class Period

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Use the Keynote App on the iPad to create shapes and magic moves to illustrate the steps of mitosis.
  • Understand the different phases of mitosis and the events that occur in each phase.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of mitosis by creating Keynote shapes, and using magic move to animate the shapes.
  • Export Keynote as a movie and share it to a Canvas Discussion.


Materials Needed:

  • iPads Updated and Charged
  • Keynote App 
  • Screen recording, Clips, or iMovie
  • Canvas course module with pre-made activities and assignments
  • Rubrics for assessment


Preparing (5 minutes):

Draw new shapes by combining or grouping existing shapes.

Animate shapes using Magic Move, or use motion paths, or other types of actions.

Combine actions to create more complex animations.

Add text boxes to include animated titles, vocabulary words, quotes, or messages.

Export your Keynote animation as a looping movie and save it to your camera roll in the Photos App.

  1. Mitosis/Meiosis will be taught prior to building Motion Graphic.
  2. Share the learning objectives with the students and explain how this lesson will help them meet these objectives.
  3. Direct students to the Canvas course module, where they will find instructions, activities, and assignments for this lesson.


Activating (10 minutes):

  1. Provide a demonstration on how to use the Keynote App to create shapes (combine, add, subtract, and magic moves.
  2. Have students work in their groups to create a rough draft of their Keynote presentation.
  3. Encourage students to work collaboratively in table groups to discuss their ideas and motion graphic design.


Navigating (10 minutes):

  1. Each student will share their motion graphic in the Graded Discussion.
  2. Provide constructive feedback and encourage the class to offer suggestions through an 💡 I.D.E. A. Share 
  3. Allow time for groups to revise their Keynote presentations based on feedback and resubmit in Canvas. 


Demonstrating (Class duration)

Use the Keynote App on the iPad to create shapes and magic moves to illustrate the steps of mitosis.

  1. Understand the different phases of mitosis and the events that occur in each phase.
  2. Demonstrate their knowledge of mitosis by creating a Keynote presentation.


Articulating Knowledge : (Day 2 Warm Up)

  1. Have students finalize their Keynote Motion Graphic.
  2. Export Motion Graphics as a Movie.
  3. Upload exported movie from the camera roll into Canvas Graded Discussion.
  4. Articulate Learning by participating in peer feedback through an IDEA Share in Canvas.


A rubric will be attached to the Graded Discussion to assess each student's Keynote Motion Graphic in the Canvas Speed Grader.
