Prepositions of Place with Stop Motion Animation

Teaching prepositions of place doesn't have to be boring!

Using Keynote, learners will experience much excitement as they bring prepositions of place to life — exploring words such as in, on, under, between, behind, and in front of. This post will detail how learners will use Stop Motion Animation to deepen their understanding of, access to, and communication about the location and position of items.

Support Prior Knowledge

Play "Where Is?" with items in the classroom. Have learners guess or describe the location of an item; encouraging them to take a photo and use Markup on iPad to note the position. Model the word usage of in, on, under, between, behind, and in front of.

Lesson Implementation

  1. To start, have all learners choose a word from the attached word bank.
  2. Next, everyone will need two objects. One will be the first object and the other will be a second object. Learners will take photos of both objects — the first object on one side of the frame, and the second object on the other. They should slightly move the second object towards the first object as they capture each photo; repeating this process until showing the intended preposition of place.
  3. Learners will then open Keynote and create a blank slide for every photo they have (approximately 8-12). They should insert one photo one each.
  4. When finished, learners can go to File > Export to save their Stop Motion Animation.

Note: Alternatively, learners can use shapes or insert photos to create their Stop Motion Animation. To do this, instruct them to begin with one slide and add objects — the first object (i.e., box, cup, chair, table, person, animal) on one side and the second object (i.e., ball, animal, person) on the other. Learners should then duplicate that initial slide 8-12 times. As they work through the slides, have them slightly move the second object closer to the first object; repeating this process until showing the intended preposition of place.

Follow-Up

Encourage learners to partner up and share their Stop Motion Animation video. Consider having them create stories, emphasizing the preposition of place word!

Teaching Tips

  • To enable all learners in accessing this lesson, consider any accessibility features that will meet individual and/or whole group needs.
  • Review the Animate with Stop Motion guide (https://education.apple.com/learning-center/T045473A-en_US).
  • Allow learners to choose how they create their Stop Motion Animation (i.e., taking pictures of objects and inserting, inserting pictures from the web, using shapes).

Super fun lesson Jordyn! I love how you integrated Photo and Markup with Stop motion. Good way for students to “experience” prepositions!

What a super idea, Jordyn! I bet students would really learn a lot with this!

I really love the proposition of prepositions! 🙌
