Keynote Presentation for Science Teachers Association of NSW
According to some, the sudden availability of tools like ChatGPT means the end of assessment - and perhaps the end of education, too, at least as we know it today. Others suggest that this is simply another educational fad, and will soon go the way of interactive whiteboards. How can educators make sense of these competing narratives? And, more importantly, are there ways AI tools might help teachers and students more effectively meet learning outcomes and reduce workload - without compromising learning or the integrity of the education system.
This presentation will consider what the future of assessment - and, by inference - learning might look like. It will discuss some of the recent developments in education, including the rise of pedAIgogy, learning analytics and stealth assessment. By adopting a learning design approach, the presentation will comment on the usefulness of these different ideas, and provide examples of how and when they have relevance in the work of science educators.
