Admins stuck between a rock and a grace place

It’s definitely a year like no other. As a public school administrator, it’s hard to navigate expectations we should enforce on staff. I understand that teacher mental health and social emotional wellness is top priority…. But now the state has restarted accountability expectations on public schools. Accountability ratings have an impact on desirability of enrollment which then has a direct impact in funding. That has an indirect impact on possible teaching positions and salary. It impacts our livelihood. We can’t completely put aside instruction expectations when the state still has the pressure on that we will be rated according to test scores.

And not only that….. the “test redesign” launches this year which makes the test EVEN HARDER! I want to support my staff as best as possible but not at the expense of instructional best practices. It not fun to always be the bad guy.

I agree it is such a hard position to be in. I always try and reframe things to "What can I control within the constraints I have?" and try to focus on the positives. Also, I think it is important to be transparent with staff, ask them what they think can be done to help wellbeing.
