Cosmos Big Ideas with iPad Illustrations and Keynote Coloring Books

The TV series Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson has been a favorite resource of mine for my 8th grade science classroom for years. Episodes seem like they are perfectly made for my learning objectives, and they are gorgeous! In the past few years, I've broken apart the episodes in various ways.

My two favorite ways have now become iPad illustrations and Keynote coloring books. While we are watching the episode, I typically have a paper/pencil viewing guide that breaks up the 40 minute video into 5-7 minute segments. We pause, chat, write/draw, and pose questions as we watch the video.

When finished with the video, I have given different options to the student to share what they've learned or just review the information a second time. This year, I worked with students to pull out the main ideas and create Keynote coloring books. I also allowed students to create their own iPad illustration of a section of the movie that just blew them away.

I'm super happy with both methods. Using the iPads in this way allow us to create, communicate, and extend the learning. With such big topics shared in such amazing videos, what more could I ask for!

I'm attaching a sample coloring book and some iPad illustrations.
