Everyone Can Code: A Journal for Early Learners
The skills our students learn when coding are skills we want them to develop across ALL areas of their learning AND it's never too early to start! Skills such as, problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration and resiliency just to name a few AND all while having fun!
I found the Everyone Can Code Early Learners Teachers Guide to be the perfect entry point for my youngest of students with a lot of great activities designed to foster these skills. I also found that with so many activities and digital artifacts, my kiddos needed a place to store their work. This prompted the creation of a Pages journal.
As learners explore the four modules of Commands, Functions, Loops and Variables (found in the Everyone Can Code Early Learner Teacher Guide) they can use the various placeholders to share their learning using photos, videos, drawings, text or even their voice.
It was amazing to see the variations from journal to journal and how the same lesson prompt could inspire so many different results. By providing our students the freedom (and space) to choose how they show their learning, projects can be scaffolded and customized for every learner.
I used this journal with students in grades K-2, but it could easily be adapted for older students too.
You can download a copy of the Pages journal here.
