Earth Day Reflections with a History Twist
Schools held some wonderful Earth Day (week and month) activities throughout April. And there are some super Earth Day posts with activities in our Community as well:
- Early Learners Celebrate Earth Day with Oliver Jeffers
- My Creative Journey to Restore the Earth Learning Journal
- Earth Day – The World You Want to See
U.S. History and social studies teachers can connect these activities in a history context by showing how posters during the 1940s from the Federal Arts Project and the Works Progress Administration encouraged environmental action and conservation efforts. Learners can pair those efforts and the reasons for them with a reflective list of what they have accomplished.
Earth Day and environmental issues can also be a Big Idea in a Challenge Based Learning lesson that can pull in history content about past campaigns.
Keynote, of course, provides a wonderful way for students to get creative and visual with their learning. I exported a Keynote example as a movie so it will play embedded here. This is my history connection and reflection to some 2023 Earth Day school activities that have been shared with me. I also uploaded the Keynote file so you can take advantage of the links.
Please post about activities your learners participate in as part of Earth Day all year long.
