How can exploring your learning preferences strengthen your coaching?

Question:

Share one thing that helps you learn. How does understanding your own learning preferences help you adapt your coaching to better meet the needs of other educators?

A coach seated in a wheelchair, in 3 scenarios: working alone on iPad, with 1 other coach, and in a group with 2 coaches.

One thing that helps me learn is being able to watch someone do something, take notes, and then do the exact same thing while they are there. That way, they can help me troubleshoot any issues.

This helps me adapt my coaching because it makes me realize that I need to give (even) adults different means of learning. Different people need to hear, see, and try out what I’m teaching them. Most people want to do things correctly, so giving people a chance to try something out in a supportive environment can be powerful for encouraging them to use it on their own!

I love to see someone walk through a workflow, so I have a visual example of steps that I can follow when I go to complete a task on my own.

This helps me in my work with other educators because I try to provide these step-by-step workflows both live and as on-demand resources. Sometimes, having that resource to return to just when you need it can be the most helpful coaching tool you can provide!

I'm a very visual learner

Perhaps knowing my own learning style can help me separate the principle needing to be learned from the style of learning it - thus enhancing my ability to coach someone who learns differently than me
