When we came back to school in September 2021, many teachers were tasked with getting to know their new students remotely. Rather than circling up face-to-face as we’d always done before, I knew I needed to find a way to engage my students and to promote sharing and dialogue. Because of this, I designed the Get to Know You Choice Board for students to create something they could share that would help us get to know them better.
With this choice board, students have the option to decorate their digital locker, decorate a selfie, create a video introduction, or personalize the bottom of a digital skateboard.
When I used this with students in the fall of 2021, they had so much fun creating products that reflected their passions and identity. Students shared and posted their creations to our class Padlet so that they could “meet” their classmates, and they made instant connections when they saw what their peers had created. It went over so well and was so engaging for students that I decided to make it an activity again this year even though we started the school year back in person.
I’ve attached the full Keynote file here that includes each option and the resources for students to personalize both the locker and the skateboard.
Happy creating!

Tanya, thank you for sharing you “welcome back and getting to know” you project. The first few days can be challenging with building new routines and establishing a social community. Your activity certainly seems to address both of those areas, as well as using a tool that benefit lessons long throughout the school year. Thanks again 😀
