As an Apple Professional Learning Specialist, working across a range of different schools to assist teachers in best practice to connect Digital Technology into the Curriculum, one of the most common questions I get asked is “How else can we present this work?”
Many teachers are looking for a range of digital tools for their digital tool boxes that they can dive in and out of to provide a personal learning experience for their students, assisting students to develop essential problem-solving skills, expand critical thinking skills, unlock their creative potential as well as the ability to be collaborative with their peers whilst strengthening independent skills.
Our traditional textbooks present with written information and supporting photographs, images, diagrams and illustrations. Students may be required to understand content where a flat two-dimensional image can be hard to visualise and interpret, especially if the diagram contains moving parts, elements that change over time, different phases, elements that are inaccessible due to location, size, availability, access, fragility, are microscopic or are three-dimensional.
Transforming the way we use typical presentation tools, we can expand the capability our Apps, evolving the way we teach, and students learn or demonstrate their understanding.
We can start to bring some of these elements to life by using Animation in Keynote and Reality Composer and support students to gain a deeper understanding of how things work with a more immersive learning experience.
In this Example we are going to be looking at creating an Animation on “How Bees Pollinate Flowers” in Keynote with Audio, and then taking the same Animation and creating an immersive 3D experience in Reality Composer. Students can view the Animation on their desk and move around in a 360 degree view. These animations may be created by a teacher as a Topic Teaching Tool or by students to show their understanding of a Topic.
KEYNOTE
Let’s start with the Keynote Deck and Tutorial Video. Download the Keynote Deck “Bee Pollinator Keynote” - see below. Inside you will find:
In the Keynote Animation Walkthrough we are going to look at how to:
- Using Shapes
- Break Apart and Combine Shapes
- Create a Scene with Shapes, Custom Shapes and Emoji’s.
- Use of Motion Paths
- Use of Transitions
- Record Audio
- Use Build Order
- Time and Delay Animation
REALITY COMPOSER
Moving into the 3D Universe can be an overwhelming and daunting task with so many moving parts to learn. Starting with a simple 3D Asset in AR Quick look is a great place to jump in and get learning.
Download the Keynote Deck “Bee Pollinator Reality Composer File” - see below. Inside you will find:
In the Reality Composer Walkthrough we are going to look at how to:
- Download a 3D Asset
- Import a 3D Asset into Reality Composer
- Create a Scene with two 3D Assets
- Group Assets
- Behaviour Cards for Animation
- Hierarchal Animation
- Hide/Wait/Show Behaviour Cards for some magic trick animation in Reality Composer
- Spatial Audio
Please note - things in the animation sequence are shortened or emphasised for effect and ease of learning for younger students.
