Analyzing Literary Theme with One Word

High School students reading and discussing F. Scott Fitzgerald's book, The Great Gatsby, analyzed the theme in a unique way. Students thought of just one word they felt described the theme of the book. Once they had their word, students went on a photo scavenger hunt to snap pictures of the letters in their words. We edited the photos and imported them into Keynote. Students created a slide with their word, a brief analysis of why they chose their word using details from the text. Then designed the slide to match the theme of the story.

This was a fun, different way to get students thinking about and discussing theme and could be used with any book. It would make a great activate lesson for them to then dig deeper with an essay on their chosen theme.
