MACUL: Making Self-Paced PD Relevant, Realistic, & Rewarding

I was fortunate to be able to present last week at MACUL re: Coaching when teachers are 'teacher tired'. We really focused on what worked and what didn't work, in terms of self-paced professional development.

What is NOT working for us: virtual live PD sessions, social media, fun teacher challenges, flyers in buildings.

What IS working for us: gaining trust through building visibility, content creation, and self-paced PD courses.

Thought it would be helpful to share our slide deck here. Check out the speaker notes for better information! Unboxing Professional Development When Teachers are 'Teacher Tired': Making Self-Paced PD Relevant, Realistic, & Rewarding

Holly, I missed your session, so I enjoyed seeing your slides and resources. It was interesting to see your experience with what worked and didn't work. I also tried doing the after school PD and found that only a few faithful people showed up, and that by mid winter even those people were too stressed to make time to come. Thanks for your insights into what is working for you!

Thanks for sharing these resources, Holly! I'd love to hear more about the self-paced PD you've designed and developed. We've seen similarly low numbers in our institution for both F2F and virtual live PD; people are just so busy and overwhelmed! I would love to know more about how teachers in your district are engaging with the self-paced PD you're using and how it's impacting classroom instruction.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I am currently a new Instructional Coach for a K-12 independent school and many of those "teacher tired" issues that are mentioned are challenges that I am trying to problem-solve. I love how you recognized that instead of trying to work around it, there are more personalized PD options and created content. This helped a lot!! I am going to see about creating some content that fits our needs and using this model to offer personalized PD options to our teachers. Thank you!
