El Deafo on Apple TV+ in the classroom

The creation of the book El Deafo by Cece Bell into an outstanding Apple TV+ show supported my 1st grade students' learning in more ways than one! El Deafo taught my students all about Cece Bell's battle with hearing loss which was an unfamiliar concept for most. Cece's adventures in each episode presented opportunities for the teaching of rich vocabulary, SEL skills, and engaging follow up activities in a Digital Learning Diary I created in Pages. Some of the activities found in this Learning Diary required students practice of language and literacy skills as well as simulated some of Cece's experiences from the episodes. To differentiate the learning in each follow up activity students were given a choice in which guiding literacy icon they would like to use to show what they know. El Deafo taught my students important values such as acceptance and kindness towards others. This year I look forward to using more Apple TV+ film in my classroom to enrich our language and literacy learning and support the teaching of SEL skills.
