Wonder, Wander, Reflect - Learning Expedition Journal

This year our school's main focus and goal is to create meaningful and unique learning expeditions for our students and their families. Many of my students come from low socioeconomic households and my principal has chosen to use funding to provide students with unique experiences throughout the year, to support learning classroom standards through a new, real-world perspective. Parents are able to attend these excursions and learn together with their student in new places throughout our state and community. To document our first Kindergarten Learning Expedition I created this Pages Book Template titled, "Wonder, Wander, Reflect". The first few pages of the book introduce my school's focus and the purpose of the digital journal. Students complete page 4 before the trip to frontload vocabulary, assess background knowledge, brainstorm and document our curiosity. To accommodate and support the different academic levels of my Kindergarten EL students, we used audio recordings, traced yellow text and lowered the opacity to guide our writing, added visuals with shapes/images, and used speech to text dictation. This allowed everyone, no matter their level, to complete the task. During our learning expedition to Zootastic, an exotic animal park, students took pictures and videos on their iPads and used the Voice Memos App to record animal noises. Upon returning, students added pictures, emojis, voice memo recordings, and mask edited pictures and shapes to document things they saw, heard, touched and smelled. Students then created a reflection reel to talk about their experience in an informal format. I love this particular example because this student is new to our country and doesn't like to talk or participate in class. However, give her an iPad, a quiet corner in the room and watch her light up! In the video she goes on for minutes sharing about her favorite part of the trip, things she didn't like, what we did, etc. I hope this digital journal documenting our learning expeditions will be something can look back upon to cherish memories for a lifetime.
