Create your own Tapa cloth design

Welcome to my Tapa Cloth Design art lesson! Tapa cloth, a traditional Polynesian textile, is celebrated for its stunning artistic patterns. Created by beating the inner bark of trees into thin sheets, these sheets are like blank canvases for beautiful designs.

In this lesson, children explore these designs and look at the unique patterns and symbols Polynesian people use. Your students will get to create their own Tapa cloth-inspired designs using Tayasui Sketches School, then import the image into a Keynote to complete their design.

You can download the Keynote to guide you through the lesson and the template to share with your tamariki (children).

Here is a quick video to demonstrate how to create a tapa design.
