Using GenAI to Understand Shakespeare

Artificial intelligence is much, much more than ChatGPT. Teaching students how to ethically leverage AI to understand complex literary ideas can be fun and easy. To get started, download the free lesson plan below to see how you can make learning Shakespeare come to life. Comprehending archaic language in Macbeth is a challenging task for anyone, so meeting the needs of contemporary students requires a change of mindset.

This is a moving image of slides in the generative AI Shakespeare lesson plan.

👉🏻 An adjusted mindset allows the teacher to embrace the benefits of using generative AI as a medium for students to develop critical thinking skills in a new and innovative way.

Activity Description

In this activity, students create a film artifact by remixing a selection of literature using Generative AI like pika.art, Canva, Runway, Luma labs, or Sora to show understanding of the context of their assigned scene.

Thanks for this lesson Pam! It is so important for students to see beneficial aspects of using AI in education as well as seeing downsides. Nice to wrap this into content that you are teaching so the application and learning are clear.

Pam, I loved hearing you share your story about how you taught Shakespeare using AI tools. Even though I was a reading teacher for middle school students, I was never a Shakespeare fan; however, if I had the opportunity to learn it like this back when I was in school, I think I would have loved it. Thank you for such a great idea. While I may not be teaching this content, this post will reach many teachers who will hopefully transform the way they teach Shakespeare and engage even more students! Thanks for sharing!!
