Logos are all around us. In this three part series we’ll discover, explore, create, and understand logos. For our first lesson we’ll embark on an exciting journey of visual discovery with logos.
Logos help establish identity, convey values and messages, create recognition, and influence perceptions. In a world saturated with visual stimuli, understanding logos empowers individuals to interpret and engage with visual communication effectively, fostering informed decision-making, and cultural awareness.
The goal of this learning activity is to enhance students' visual literacy and understanding of branding and design principles. By actively searching for and categorizing logos from various sources, students will develop a deeper appreciation for how logos communicate messages and represent different entities.
Students will achieve success by effectively identifying, categorizing, and analyzing logos based on their visual elements, colors, typography, and symbolism. Success will also be measured by their ability to articulate their observations and insights into how logos contribute to brand identity and consumer perception.
Throughout the project, students will learn and practice several skills: visual analysis, critical thinking, research skills, creativity, and communication. This project was chosen to engage students actively in the exploration of visual communication and branding, topics that are relevant and impactful in today's media-driven world.
By interacting with real-world examples of logos through a scavenger hunt and sorting activity, students can apply theoretical concepts in a practical and meaningful way, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of design and branding principles.
Logo Scavenger Hunt
Embarking on a stroll through bustling downtown streets or navigating the aisles of a supermarket, capturing images of logos presents a fun and engaging exploration of branding and visual identity in everyday urban environments.
Step 1: Decide which downtown area or supermarket to visit based on the density and variety of logos you're interested in capturing.
Step 2: Focus on specific logos or types of logos you want students to capture. This could include brands, signage, product packaging, or advertising materials.
Step 3: Walk through the area systematically, encouraging students to keep an eye out for logos that match their interests. Use the camera app to take clear, well-lit photos of each logo.
Step 4: Review the images to ensure they are clear and relevant and place them in your learning journal.
Creating an Open Sort with Logos
Once you are back in the classroom, take learning a step further by printing each students’ collection of logos.
Step 1: Students cut apart logo cards and sort them according to categories or criteria of their choosing. This is a good opportunity to encourage collaboration and communication.
Step 2: Create a video to describe their process of sorting and the reasoning behind the choices they made for categories and sorting criteria. This conversation can easily lead to a discussion of the seven types of logo used in marketing and branding.
Check for Understanding
Have students choose four of their logos to feature in showing what they’ve learned. They can insert a photo of their logo, tell what type of logo it is, and how they know.
