“Count with Me” - Using iPad to Create a Book with Early Learners!

Children LOVE to create things to share what they are learning with others. “Count with Me” is a Keynote template you can download and use with even the youngest of learners to help them create a book about numbers. Students can use drawing, click and drag shapes, and even add audio to create their own number book with your support.

Download a Keynote template at the bottom of this post to start creating with your students.

How do I get the template to my students?

  1. Check to make sure the iPad has the Keynote app installed.
  2. Download the template from the attachments below.
  3. Airdrop a copy of the template to student iPads.
  4. Tap on the Keynote file on student iPads to open.
  5. Tap EDIT to begin creating.

How do students create with the Keynote template?

  1. Tap EDIT at the top of the template.
  2. Add a photo to the cover of the student book by tapping the 📷 icon.

3. Tap drawing.

4. Choose one of the drawing tools and ask students to write their name on the line provided.

How do students drag and drop the animal shapes into the circle to show number knowledge?

  1. Tap on a slide 2.
  2. Have students tap on an animal shape and drag the shape(s) into the circle to represent the number on the blue square of the slide.

Continue clicking and dragging the animal shapes on each slide until the book is completed.

What do students do when they are finished moving the shapes on all the slides of the template?

  1. Tap the sharrow button (box with an arrow at the top of the screen) to export the book as a PDF.
  2. This will open the PDF in Books on the iPad so students can read their book over and over again.

Do you use Seesaw with your class? Add the PDF version of the book to your students’ Seesaw Learning Journal. Now students can read the book to their families at home.

Extension:

Have students record audio as they read each page of the book. Export the book as a movie. Students can listen to the book as they watch the video in the photos app.

Upload the movie of the book being read by students to Seesaw to share with families.

How easy would it be to create more books using Keynote templates with your students?

I'd love to hear your ideas! Share in the comments below.

Download the Keynote templates attached to start creating books with your students.

Note: Use the "numbers template" for Kindergarten students to match the number words with objects as they create their books. Use the "numeral template" for Preschool students to match numerals with objects as they create their books.

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing! I agree that students love to share what they create. How cool would it be if the Kindergarteners could take their books to the Pre-K classes and buddy up and read with them?!

Looks great! I like the idea of using the shapes with early learners for math visualization.
