Build Classroom Community with Camera Activity for Early Learners

Objective:

To help littlest learners build a sense of community and get to know their classmates by creating a personalized digital poster that includes a photo of themselves and their name using an iPad and the Markup tool. Additionally, students can include their, hobbies, family, and favorite things they like in the photo. Teacher will create a book for Back to School Parent night to showcase to parents using Keynote.

Activity Overview:

In this back to school activity, each student will create their own "All About Me!" digital poster. Using an iPad, students will take a photo of themselves and then use the Markup tool to write their name, draw pictures, use emojis, and/or add details about their hobbies, family, and favorite things. This engaging and interactive project will help students practice basic tech skills while expressing their individuality and learning more about their classmates.

Materials Needed:

  • iPads with a camera and Markup tool
  • A quiet, well-lit space for taking photos
  • Optional: A stylus for drawing on the iPad (if available)

Steps:

1.Introduction:

  • Begin by explaining to the students that they will be making a special digital poster all about themselves to share with the class and their parents.
  • Talk about what kinds of things they might want to include, such as their favorite color, a picture of their family, or their favorite sport to play.

2.Taking a Photo:

  • Show students how to use the iPad to take a picture of themselves.
  • Assist them in capturing a photo that they are happy with, encouraging smiles and fun poses.

3.Using the Markup Tool:

  • Demonstrate how to access the Markup tool on the iPad.
  • Show students how to write their name on the photo using their finger or a stylus.
  • Encourage them to write their name and draw or write about their favorite hobbies, their family, and anything else they want to share. For example, they could draw a picture of their pet or write the name of their favorite food. If unable to write yet, they can just use their drawing skills. They can also use emojis to express themselves.

4.Sharing with the Class:

  • Once everyone has completed their "All About Me!" poster, gather the class for a sharing session.
  • Each student can show their digital poster on the iPad and talk about what they included.
  • Celebrate each student’s work and use this opportunity to highlight similarities and unique qualities within the group.
  • Students will share their photo with their teacher for you to compile all of the images into a digital book in Keynote. Below is a free downloadable template attachment with placeholders for your own images.

5.Sharing with the Parents:

  • Compile the digital posters into a Keynote Slideshow, and/or print out and display in the classroom.
  • Share the Completed Keynote Slideshow with parents at the Back to School night.
  • This will create a welcoming environment where students feel represented and valued.

Impact on Learning

By participating in this activity, students will not only develop a sense of belonging within the classroom community but also enhance their fine motor and basic technology skills. It’s a fun and creative way to start the school year, help young learners feel connected to their peers and excited about the year ahead while using the iPad.

Great activity. Thank you! It's simple and focused on building relationships and teaching some self-awareness and reflective practice along the way. I wonder if Schoolwork would help facilitate this activity from a workflow perspective. It makes the work flow happen so much smoother for young learners.
