Spelling Sound Hunt Activity

Objective:

  • Students will identify specific sounds in their environment and document them using a Keynote scaffold, enhancing their phonemic awareness, spelling, and sentence-building skills.

Activity Description:

In this interactive spelling activity, students will explore the classroom to find words that contain specific target sounds. Using a Keynote scaffold, they will document their findings by taking photos, recording the word, drawing it with their finger, and writing a sentence using the word. This multi-step approach reinforces their understanding of sounds and spelling patterns.

Instructions:

Introduction: Start by introducing the target sounds for the day (e.g., ‘sh,’ ‘ch,’ ‘th,’ ‘igh’). Display these sounds on the board for easy reference.

Sound Hunt: Students will move around the room to find objects, labels, or pictures that contain the target sound. For example, if the sound is ‘ch,’ they might find a chair.

Document in Keynote:

  • Take a Photo: Once they find a word with the target sound, students will take a photo of the object using the Keynote scaffold on their iPad.
  • Record the Word: Students will use the audio feature in Keynote to record themselves saying the word.
  • Draw the Word: They will use the drawing tool to write the word with their finger, reinforcing letter formation and sound association.
  • Write a Sentence: Finally, students will type or write a sentence using the word to show they understand its context and meaning.

Repeat: Students can add new slides to continue hunting for more words that contain the target sounds, documenting each find with the same process.

Share: At the end of the activity, students can present their slides to the class, sharing the words and sentences they created.
