My second graders created iMovies to showcase their summer dreams and goals, giving them an exciting first experience with iMovie. They selected images representing their plans and used green screen effects to enhance their videos. While working on their projects, they collaborated and helped one another throughout the process. It was so much fun to see my students express their creativity and build confidence with their iPads
Lesson Directions:
Inform students that we will be making iMovie videos about what we are looking forward to most this summer.
Students will view an example iMovie.
Invite students to find a photo in their camera roll or on the internet that fits their summer goal (e.g., enjoying the beach, going to a water park, cooking with grandma, riding their bike, etc.), and save it.
With a small square of green paper, invite students to use the Camera app in selfie mode and record their video with the following script: "Hi! My name is... and something that I am looking forward to this summer is..." Then they will hold up the green paper and slowly bring it forward to cover the camera.
Once students have collected their photo and made their video, they will be ready to put it all together in iMovie.
- Open iMovie on your iPad.
- Tap "Start New Project" at the bottom.
- Select your summer photo.
- Tap "Create Movie" at the bottom.
- Tap your photo to get the yellow bar.
- Drag the photo out to the right (this will make the video longer, about 20-30 seconds).
- Select the video we made.
- Tap the three dots (…).
- Select "Green/Blue Screen".
- Tap your movie to get the yellow bar.
- In the upper left corner, tap "Reset".
- Find the section of the movie with your green paper and tap the green paper to make it transparent.
