Digital Drawing: Famous Artists Focus

Unleash Your Inner Artist: Integrating Technology into Art Lessons! Calling all those who want to create (especially those who don't see themselves as artists!)

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is supporting teachers in integrating technology through coaching. I had the privilege of working with Year/Grade 1 students and their enthusiastic teachers. (However, the resources shared here could be adapted to suit any year level.)

The learning intention was to develop students' drawing abilities where they were introduced to the Tayasui Sketches for Schools app with an artist-inspired approach. In this example, the students explored line, shape, colour, and patterns through the lens of abstract art, inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. They became familiar with the brushes, tools and features available. In the Keynote resource below, some of the 'how to' images are included to provide a guide for the students.

The world is your oyster. You could focus on one artist, introduce another completely different artist or choose multiple artists to hone in on the skills.

This playlist, Famous Artist Narrated Digital Storybooks, is a wonderful example to introduce the students to a wealth of artists and styles.

The growth in their skills from the beginning to end of term was impressive! Kudos to the teachers who want to continually learn. This coaching cycle has led to a simple but effective example of how technology can enhance learning and student engagement.

Also, there’s nothing like the joy of witnessing the reaction when someone uses Apple Classroom for the first time! (Side note: it was a winter fundraiser that day!)

A project that I use with my 6th-grade students is to use Sketches and do a historical refurbishment of Nefertiti's bust.

Brian, didn’t you post that refurbishment lesson in the Community? I remember reading about it.

Love this lesson idea - it’s art and history at the same time!

I’m going to search for that post!

Thank you so much! It was a great coaching experience with enthusiastic clientele and the fun they had creating art was a delight.
