Digital Art: Using specific Sketches School tools to create a masterpiece!

I've been working alongside Year 2 and 3 learners to learn what the tools can do on the Sketches School app.

I read the story 'Once There was a Taniwha' by Joseph Potangaroa. We had a go at drawing our own taniwha using only the acrylic paint tool and smudge tool. We wanted to create an underwater view of a taniwha and we used the smudge tool to create that effect. The kids really enjoyed exploring these two tools to see what they could create and found it easy to use the smudge tool to add to their drawing.

Our core belief (disposition) focus was Collaboration and students gave and received feedback to improve their digital art.

This was a great lesson to teach the specific skills around these tools and for the kids to explore creating digital artwork with a difference!

Emma - Thanks so much for the download! It showcases your lesson so beautifully with brushes identifications, lesson plan and final project! I’d love to see a screen shot of the Keynote slide with the Taniwha embedded in your post. It would certainly draw folks in to your story. Looks like an amazing creature to me! Thanks for the share.

This is great, Emma!

Sketches School is such a great app! I know it’s a favourite of our students! 🙌

I love the creatively at work with just two tools. Creative constraints and limited tools often leads to such great outcomes!

It was a great way to engage the children in:

  • How to use the tool better (Sketches school)
  • Our Core Beliefs of Collaboration (the feedback loop), as well as Creativity
  • A local traditional story of our area
