5th grade students were learning all about how the energy in an ecosystem is transferred. They were tasked with building a farm to supply all of the items needed to make a pizza.
After talking with a teacher, we decided to start this project at the beginning of the unit. We introduced the unit, and then instructed students to make a pizza farm using shapes from Keynote. They created one slide initially. Each week, after learning more content in science class, they created an additional slide to make changes based on the knowledge that they gained. They keep adding a new slide and adapting their ideas as things change. Students then added their voice to each slide talking about the why behind the changes that they made.
Students really unlocked their creativity with this challenge and worked hard to be sure they had all of the ingredients needed to make a pizza.
