Jennifer Orton (@jorton) and I met at ADE institute in 2023 and have been working on compiling lessons for high school teachers using MacBooks or iPads in class. Jennifer uses iPads, and I use MacBooks, and in our collaboration, we realized that small adjustments can be made to apply the lessons in each environment. Over the next 30 days, we’ll post one lesson idea each day!
Lesson Idea #8: Animating a Word Problem
When working with this teacher on her lesson with quadratics, she expressed a desire for students to create their own word problems to share with the class.
Students took their formulas and input them into Grapher on their MacBooks and used the screenshot of their grapherd equation as their slide background in Keynote. Students then chose an image from the shapes library to represent their problem (in this example, a dolphin) and used the path animation to show the real life connection.
Students also explained how to solve their problem by recording audio onto their slide. Each student exported their problem to movie and put it in a media album for the class to access.
📣 How could you use shape animations to explain a process in your classroom?

Yes yes yes!!! I always encourage my students to draw a picture for their word problems. For younger ages, they can use Magic Move to illustrate addition on a ten-frame, or they can illustrate a short story using the shape animations!
