High School Learning with Apple #14: Completing a Portfolio of Work

Jennifer Orton (@jorton) and I met at ADE institute in 2023 and have been working on compiling lessons for high school teachers using MacBooks or iPads in class. Jennifer uses iPads, and I use MacBooks, and in our collaboration, we realized that small adjustments can be made to apply the lessons in each environment. Over the next 30 days, we’ll post one lesson idea each day!

Lesson Idea #14: Completing a Portfolio of Work

An explanation of a multi-genre project in an English class with a sample social media post included
This English teacher took a variety of ideas that we had discussed informally and used them to create a portfolio of work in a multi-genre project. At the end of the course, the teacher had the students reflect on unifying themes that the students identified throughout the school year in the texts they had covered.

The students were required to use three major works chosen by the teacher, and the students could choose the fourth. They were to identify the unifying themes in those four works as the basis for their project. Students were provided a Pages template to use for their portfolio of work. That template included a cover (to be designed by the student), an introductory letter, a creative writing entry, an art entry, a multi-media entry, a social media entry, and reflection letter. Each of the chosen/assigned major works would be represented by one of the four required genre entries.

The teacher wanted to spur the creativity of his students by having them showcase their interpretations in a way they saw fit.
