High School Learning with Apple #21: Parts of a Recipe GIF

@Dragon_Coach and I met at ADE institute in 2023 and have been working on compiling lessons for high school teachers using MacBooks or iPads in class. @Dragon_Coach uses MacBooks, and I use iPads, and in our collaboration, we realized that small adjustments can be made to apply the lessons in each environment. Over the next 30 days, we’ll post one lesson idea each day with tips on how to make it work in either environment you are teaching in.

High School Learning with Apple #21: Parts of a Recipe GIF

This lesson, adapted from a hands-on paper plate activity, engages students in creating animated GIFs about recipe structure.

Students study diverse recipe formats, including standard, narrative, and active styles, to analyze how information is presented. They identify the seven core components common to all recipe types.

To demonstrate comprehension, students use Keynote to visually represent these components using shapes, text boxes, drawing tools, and animation features. This digital approach reinforces their understanding of recipe structure and introduces problem-solving related to digital design and animation.

Students create a series of slides in Keynote, each dedicated to a recipe part, with a clear label and a specific example. These slides are animated using Keynote’s animation tools and exported as a GIF.

This process adds digital literacy and encourages creative expression as students determine how to best visually communicate each component through animation.
