Context
The nervous system is difficult to visualise. Augmented reality (AR) allows students to “walk through” a reflex arc and simulate signal transmission.
Preparation & Flow
Introduction: Neural Pathway Exploration (15 mins)
(Teacher-led) Recap on the nervous system and neural pathways
Students then explore Merge Explorer models of nervous systems in pairs, including the spinal cord, neurones, and synapses.
Simulate a Reflex (25 mins)
Students act out and record a reflex arc skit using Clips or iMovie. Each group is assigned a different type of stimulus (e.g., heat, touch, pain).
Teachers should re-emphasise that this should be a skit and students should not engage in anything dangerous (e.g., putting their hands to a hot surface).
Video Analysis (15 mins)
Use slow motion or annotation to show stages: receptor → sensory neurone → relay neurone → motor neurone → effector
Wrap-up and Reflection (10 mins)
Teachers can prompt questions to engage students further in learning. For example, “If you remove the relay neurone, what would happen?”. Critical discussions after lessons can contribute to participation points in class.
