Context
Empathy for events and more importantly people in historical or even current events helps us appreciate those moments and actions more. Through drawing and narrating the characters and setting in this activity, students will hopefully develop a keener appreciation of the depth and context of human emotions, struggles etc
Preparation and Flow
Prepare a template for students stating your goal and task. In this example, I have a Keynote template you can download to amend below. In it you will find a task to find a historical source related to Singapore during the Japanese Occupation.
Students are to insert a source image/artwork. Have it reduced in opacity and locked in place in the template.
Next students will be required to reproduce the image/artwork. Have students do the following:
- Tap on the screen with an Apple Pencil
- Select drawing tool, colour, stroke and opacity
- Start tracing
Eventually, students will be required to remove the original artwork and animate the lines they drawn using the 'line draw' animation. Pro tip, using opacity on the drawing tool gives you a water colour like feel to the strokes, and allow some blending/overlapping look.
Finally, students will be required to answer a reflection, followed by some background research to add to the context of the source e.g. living conditions in relation to food shortages during the occupation.
Possible Extension
The template below does not ask for students to add a narration. This could easily be done by tapping on the add media option. Hence instead of just adding information, students can express their reflection as the drawing they made is animated, further deepening their interaction with the source discovery experience.
