Context
As a history teacher, I would have love to bring my students to see real artefacts, say a statue or relic, and have them examine them up close and personal so to bring greater realism for the purpose of greater appreciation. However, it is not always possible if at all. So if we can bring them to view the artefacts, why not bring the artefacts to them? To do so we can try using AR technology to bring the artefacts to the classroom for greater visualisation and engagement.
Preparation and Flow
For this ancient history lesson, teacher may have to scan the desired artefacts using apps such like Scaniverse or Photocatch from a museum.
1. Setting the context. Explain to students how artefacts are a window to seeing how a people lived and interacted with the physical and social environment they were in. Also show students how a 3D object can be viewed just by opening the file.
2. Students may be grouped for this activity so they can examine different artefacts and make inferences as to origins, purpose, physical features and perhaps purpose an intent of the artefact to the people/culture
3. Share with students the folder of 3D/USDZ objects and have them examine them in the space that they are in. Great to have them move around and into the objects physically to interact with the life-sized artefacts.
4. Finally have students note down their findings/thoughts for further discussion/inquiry.
Possible Extension
Scan any possible objects and even places using Scaniverse which could be applied to various subjects such like science, geography, art, design and technology.
