Reimagine the Novel Study: 30 Evidence-Informed Reading Activities

Reading continues to be a targeted focus of improvement in all schools, across all systems and sectors of education. It is life-changing.

Effective teaching of literacy involves explicit, research-informed practice, so when four Apple Professional Learning Specialists came together to share their passion for the teaching of reading through the power of technology, we saw a great opportunity to engage with an essential question:

How might we build a resources designed to engage and motivate students to demonstrate and build their reading skills through the use of powerful Apple technology?

We’d like to share our build-your-own resource for teachers -

‘30 Evidence Informed Reading Activities’

The 30 activities are a series of templates designed to transform the teaching of reading by providing upper primary and lower secondary students with creative ways to engage with literacy and literature, through the conduit of technology. These activities can be implemented across the curriculum and provide students with opportunities to demonstrate skills, understandings and deep analysis.

With built-in accessibility tools, all students are able to access and respond to prompts multi-modally through specific Keynote templates. The templates are highly visual and can be easily personalised based on the needs of individual learners. Curation and deployment is fast and easy via Airdrop or any school’s preferred Learning Management System (LMS), including Apple’s ClassWork and Classroom for collaboration.

In the full version of the resource, all 30 templates are hidden and can be added to lessons as required. This makes planning, teaching and assessing easy and highly efficient.

Example Lesson Idea: Voice Transcript AI

Fluency

By using the Voice Memos app, students are able to easily record an oral reading performance and analyse it by listening and extracting a text transcript or their recording. This single slide contains:

  • A copy of the voice recording
  • An automatically generated text transcript
  • Self-assessment tools
  • An opportunity to modify the text with AI

Outcome: students are able to self-assess their oral reading performance and set a goal.

Instructions:

  1. Use Voice Memos (app) to record an oral reading performance.
  2. Copy and paste it onto the Keynote activity slide.
  3. Copy and paste transcript of oral reading and check for accuracy (use mark-up tools)
  4. Set a performance goal.
  5. Use AI to explore tone changes.
