One of the great barriers to integrating more independent choices in student workflow is how to assess and document both the choices students make, and what they learned from doing so. My classroom is a makerspace with students ages 14-19, and students are working on all different steps of a project simultaneously, so teaching accountability is key.
I’m sharing a Pages document that my students use, and that you’re welcome to download and edit to fit your classroom vibes. Each day they account for how they spent their class time (“I sanded my project until it was smooth,” “I helped put the vices back together,” “I designed a file to cut on the CNC router”) and what they got out of it. Students aren’t always asked to be aware of their learning process, so guidance and examples go a long way toward getting quality responses: “I learned that you should use the right kind of glue” is important, but “I learned that it takes teamwork for each of us to build a box” is richer.
