This activity is so versatile and could be used in a variety of year levels or related to a range of texts. Using Freeform students will design their own book cover, with a photo of them ‘reading’ the book included.
- Firstly start by going to shapes and chose the ‘open book’ shape. Select your colour and make it quite large, filling most of your Freeform space.
- Next add some text for the cover. Students will need to type the name of the book, and by using the paint brush tool make the text larger and change the font and colour. Then they can add the author’s name in a smaller similar font.
- A great addition is to add text to the spine of the book. To do this, add text like you did before, but use two fingers to rotate the text so it appears vertically along the spine of your book.
- To extend your students, encourage them to write a blurb on the back cover of the book. (TIP - make sure they can identity which is the front and back covers!!).
- Now they can be creative with drawing tools or other shapes to add illustrations to their front and back covers, keeping in mind what would make an effective and eye catching book cover that someone would want to pick up off the shelf!
- As a final step, your students can add their own selfie to the work. Firstly take a selfie by clicking on the paper clip to open your camera. Take the selfie, and then tap the photo and then the image icon. Next you can tap ‘remove background’.
- Now you will notice that the photo is on top of your book cover, we want it to sit behind the layers. Tap on … and then select ‘back’ to send it to the back of your book design.
- Finally, ask students to screenshot their amazing work!

Very smart, - another great idea with Freeform! Love that students will take a picture of themselves reading the book. In addition, the book cover might be something they design for their favorite book or something they write themselves. Nice - thanks for the idea!
