Have you ever noticed how a simple photo can instantly take you back to a moment? The laughter, the energy, the pride? What if we could capture that feeling visually? What if there was a way for members to express what the Club looks like to them? Not in words, but in color itself.
🎯 Focus / Takeaway
In this activity, educators will use Apple’s “Pick a Color Palette” Keynote template to help members extract meaningful color palettes from photos taken during Club activities. The goal isn’t just creativity — it’s emotional expression, community identity, and connection.
Outcomes:
- Use iPad + Keynote to create a custom color palette from an image.
- Connect color choices back to emotional and social experiences at the Club.
- Provide a reflective sharing moment that builds belonging and voice.
📋 Practical Strategies & Instructions
We’ll use the I Do, We Do, You Do structure — with time for community building and reflection. You will need:
- iPad devices
- Keynote App on iPad (Free) - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/keynote-design-presentations/id361285480?platform=ipad
- Apple Pencils or Logitech Crayon (optional)
- Keynote Template (https://education.apple.com/learning-center/T055834A-en_US?cid=pm-enus-atlc-na-edu-eccreate-btsstudent24 )
Community Builder
Think of a moment at the Club that made you smile recently.
👩🏫 I Do (5 min)
Demo:
- Open the “Pick a Color Palette” Keynote template on iPad.
- Insert a Club photo in the media placeholder.
- Tap one of the shapes, go to Format → Fill → Color.
- Use the eye dropper to sample colors from the photo.
- Repeat to build a palette representative of the image.
Did you know you can save the custom colors your members create? Here is how to save a color:
- After selecting your color with the eyedropper tool, locate the current color circle in the color menu.
- Tap and hold the color circle, then drag it into one of the empty squares in the color grid at the bottom of the menu.
- Repeat for each color in your palette so you can easily access them later.
Saving your colors allows members to reuse their Club-inspired palette in future projects!
🤝 We Do (10–15 min)
Before jumping into the template, practice picking out colors first:
- Two ways to do this: Members select their own Club photo from a collection of photos OR give them a chance to go around the Club and capture their own photos
- Together, practice identifying colors, naming colors with feelings:
- Sunset orange = energy
- Sky blue = calm/friendship
- Grass green = growth
👤 You Do (15–20 min)
Members now create their own palette:
- Open the “Pick a Color Palette” Keynote template on iPad.
- Insert the Club photo in the media placeholder.
- Extract 4–6 colors using the eye dropper
- Name each color with an emotion or Club value (e.g., joy, teamwork, resilience)
Encourage meaningful labels; this is where reflection meets creativity.
📣 Share & Reflect
- Feedback Sandwich: Each member gives one compliment, one suggestion, one question.
- Rotation Sharing: Small groups rotate so everyone gets a turn to present to 2–3 peers.
- Gallery Walk: Display color palettes at different stations while members move around and look.
This activity was powerful because it met members where they are. Using color made reflection feel accessible, especially for members who may struggle to put their emotions into words. We saw strong engagement when members connected specific colors to real Club moments, reinforcing the idea that the Club is not just a place they go, but a space that shapes how they feel. One challenge was helping members move beyond choosing colors they simply liked to choosing colors with meaning, which reminded us how important modeling and shared language around emotions can be. Overall, the experience confirmed that when technology is used as a tool for expression rather than just creation, it deepens connection and belonging.
Saving their custom colors also opens the door for future creativity. Members can reuse their Club-inspired palettes when designing Keynote presentations, digital posters for upcoming events, graphics for Club social media, or even elements of a digital yearbook or member showcase. Carrying these colors into future projects helps members build a visual identity for their Club while reinforcing the stories and experiences behind the colors they chose.
If your members could leave behind a visual “snapshot” of what the Club feels like to them, what colors do you think would show up again and again and what would that tell you about the experience you’re creating?
