Ready, Set, Safe: Using Shortcuts to Strengthen Family Disaster Preparedness

Disaster preparedness begins at home. In this activity, students design a secure Family Emergency Shortcut that helps family members access critical information, communicate quickly, and respond effectively during emergencies.

By combining Disaster Risk Reduction Management principles with automation tools on iPad and iPhone, learners create meaningful solutions that can make a real difference in their families and communities.

Learning Experience

🕵 Investigate. Students work with their families to identify:

  • Common hazards in their community
  • Emergency contact persons
  • Evacuation centers
  • Family meeting points
  • Important emergency information that should be easily accessible

👨🏻‍💻 Design. Students develop a disaster preparedness plan and identify ways technology can support it.

  • They can sketch a workflow using Freeform or Keynote that allows family members to quickly access emergency information while protecting sensitive data.

👷🏼‍♂️ Create. Using the Shortcuts app, students create a Family Emergency Shortcut. If the students doesn't know how to code they may use ShortcutStudio - AI Shortcuts. Create a prompt and inspect their shortcut.

Prompt for shortcut actions
Develop a prompt for your chosen shortcut, tailored specifically to the stage of ideation you are currently in.

✅ Inspect and Test

Now that you have created your Pamilya Alert shortcut, invite a classmate to inspect and test your solution. Ask them to:

  • Run the shortcut and navigate through each menu option.
  • Verify that all links, contacts, and directions work correctly.
  • Identify any steps that may be confusing or difficult to use during an emergency.
  • Suggest additional features that could improve family preparedness and safety.

Line of actions for the shortcut
Conduct a peer-review session to test links, security features, and overall usability.

💪🏼 Extension Challenge!

Students can create a Typhoon Alert Shortcut that:

  • Retrieves the latest weather forecast
  • Displays preparedness reminders
  • Suggests actions based on weather conditions

For example:

  • Yellow Alert → Charge devices
  • Orange Alert → Prepare go-bags
  • Red Alert → Evacuate if advised
