Encourage social awareness among learners through creative report cards made in Pages.
As we discuss different government administrations, it's important to help students think like citizens — evaluating how well our government practices good governance.
In our class, we use three criteria as our framework:
CRITERIA FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE
- Effectiveness — Did the policies of the administration help solve problems and improve people's lives?
- Transparency — Were the leaders honest, accountable, and open to the public?
- Participation — Were citizens involved, consulted, or considered in decision-making?
To prepare students for this, we introduced scaffolding activities at the start of the school year, beginning with note-taking templates and a grading system. To make it more relatable, we aligned it with our school's existing grading system, including the descriptors for each letter grade.
Over time, this practice of evaluating individual policies gradually develops into a more collective and holistic view of each administration.
Students now evaluate any administration within the scope of their lesson, rating how well it practiced good governance across the three criteria. This opens the door to rich classroom discussions, as students are expected to back up their grades with evidence and information from our lessons.
