[Filipino Literacy] Advocacy Song: Enrichment of Language, Grammar and Comprehension Skills in Filipino through Songwriting

Pamagat: Awit ng Adbokasiya: Pagpapayaman ng Kakayahang Wika at Gramatika sa Pamamagitan ng Pagbabanda at Pagkanta

How can we spark the interest and creativity of the students in learning and showing what they learned in both Pang-ukol (Grammar) in Ibong Adarna (Literature)?

  • Pang-ukol: This is a part of speech in Filipino that is used to indicate movements and directions to/from an object. Examples in Filipino are: sa, para sa, mula sa, tungkol sa.

Use an essential part of their lives! Use songs!

OVERVIEW

This Performance Task will allow the students to explore their understanding of the text, enrich their grammar and communication skills and resourcefulness, hone their talents and collaborate with peers when conveying an important message about the theme and values promoted in Ibong Adarna.

CONTEXT

Grade Level: 7

Unit: 4

Objective: Convey a message through a self-composed song and lyric video about a specific theme from Ibong Adarna using pang-ukol.

STAGES OF SONGWRITING

Stage 1: Pre-Writing

1. Theme-Building - Decide on the theme.

2. Word Mapping - Using Freeform, list down words that are associated with theme. These words can be used for they lyric writing. The Freeform will allow the students in a group to freely jot down ideas and make connections in one page. This ensures that each member gets to see how others think and interact with each other.

3. Tasks Assignment - Using Freeform, assign the different “band” roles (vocalist and instruments). The group can use the same Freeform file used for word mapping, so all plans are accessible by all members.

Stage 2: Actual Writing

4. Lyric Writing - Using Freeform, the students will write their drafts.

The SCENE option (lower left) on Freeform can be utilized to compartmentalize the page into different stages/parts.

Stage 3: Post Writing

5. Recording - Using Voice Memo, the vocalist/s and instrument players will record their performance.

6. Lyric Video - Keynote the students will produce their own lyric video of the song, highlighting the PANG-UKOL used in the lyrics.

This screenshot shows how the "pang-ukol/s" were encircled in the Keynote.

The audio can be live recorded, but if VOICE MEMO was used, the audio file can be dragged and dropped directly onto the slide.

7. LISTENING PARTY - Once ready, each group will play their lyric video inside their class. The audience can also share the message they got from the songs.

By the end of the project, teachers can also make a short check-in with the students by asking them to reflect on their experience in producing their own songs and lyric videos.

Try this with other subjects as well! This structure works when the learning goal is to produce an informative output that the students will exhibit for an audience to see such as slogans, infomercial, advertisement, etc.
