Level : 13 - 15 year old second language learners
Students explore the concepts of nuclear and extended families using the digital journal provided. They observe the sample layouts and discuss the differences between the two family types.
Students:
- identify members of a nuclear and an extended family;
- identify the meanings of unfamiliar family-related words
- create sentences describing their family members
- share responses on family-related topics
Explore and Create
Students use Apple Photos to select family photos and insert them into the digital journal.
Working individually, students:
- complete the My Nuclear Family page by inserting and labelling family members;
- complete the My Extended Family page by adding extended family members and annotating each relationship; and
- write a simple sentence to describe each family member.
Students then use the Define feature in Pages to check the meanings of unfamiliar family-related vocabulary and add any new words to their vocabulary list.
Share
Students use Voice Memos to record their responses to one of the family-related discussion questions provided in the journal. They are encouraged to express their opinions clearly and support them with reasons.
Selected recordings are shared with the class, followed by a brief discussion and teacher feedback.
Reflect
Students reflect on their learning by responding to the following questions:
- What new family-related words did you learn today?
- Which family member has influenced you the most? Why?
- What is one thing you appreciate about your family?
Students may record their reflections in Pages or share them verbally with the class.
