In this lesson, students create a simple Apple Shortcut that acts as a daily personal wellness tracker. Each day, the Shortcut prompts students to record their personal water intake, physical activity, sleep duration, mood, and screen time. Responses are automatically saved to a spreadsheet in Apple Notes, allowing students to analyse trends and reflect on how daily habits affect their overall well-being.
Healthy lifestyle habits are best developed through consistent self-monitoring and reflection.
The activity integrates health education with digital literacy and computational thinking by demonstrating how automation can support healthy decision-making.

Step/Lesson Flow Plan:
Step 1: Engage (10 minutes)
Begin the lesson by engaging students in a discussion about healthy lifestyle habits. Ask questions such as, "How many glasses of water do you drink each day?", "How many hours did you sleep last night?", and "Do you think you exercise enough each week?"
Invite students to estimate their daily habits and discuss why it can be difficult to remember these behaviours accurately. Teacher explains that many people overestimate healthy behaviours because they rely on memory.
Also, teacher will emphasize and explain that technology can help us build healthier routines by making self-monitoring simple and consistent.
Then, Introduce today's challenge:
"Let's build a digital wellness assistant using Apple Shortcuts."
Step 2: Explain (15 minutes)
Next, introduce Apple Shortcuts as a personal wellness assistant.
Demonstrate how to create a simple shortcut that asks users to enter their daily health information, including water intake, exercise duration, sleep hours, screen time, and mood.
The teacher will guide students through adding each action using Ask for Input, combining the responses into a formatted text, and automatically saving the information to a dedicated note using the Append to Note action. Once the shortcut is completed, allow students to personalise it by selecting an icon, colour, and custom name before testing it with sample data.
Shortcuts Tutorials: Create a Healthy Habits Tracker in Apple Shortcuts
Apple explains that Shortcuts works by combining actions, and Ask for Input is useful for logging health-style data such as journal entries or daily records.
Version 1: Simple Tracker Using Notes
Before You Start
Open Notes and create a new note titled Healthy Habits Tracker and insert Student Name:
Tutorial Step 1: Open Shortcuts
- Open the Shortcuts app.
- Tap + to create a new shortcut.
- Rename it: Healthy Habits Tracker
- Choose an icon, such as a heart, water drop, or running symbol.
Finalize your icon, rename the shortcuts and pick the colour of the icon.
Tutorial Step 2: Get Date from
- Tap Add Action.
- Search for Get Date.
- Add Current Date.
Tutorial Step 3: Ask Water Intake
- Tap Add Action.
- Search Ask for Input.
- Change the question to: Glasses of Water
- Set input type to Number.
Tutorial Step 4: Exercise Time
- Add another Ask for Input action.
- Change the Question:Minutes you exercise
- Input type: Number
Tutorial Step 5: Sleep Hours
- Add another Ask for Input action.
- Question: Sleep Hours
- Input type: Number
Tutorial Step 6: Ask Screen Time
- Add another Ask for Input action.
- Question: Hours of Screen Time
- Input type: Number
Tutorial Step 7: Ask Mood
- Add Choose from Menu.
- Question: How do you feel today?
- Add menu choices: Excellent, Good, Neutral, Okay, Tired
Tutorial Step 8: Create the Daily Log Text
- Add Text action.
- Type this format:
Date: [Current Date]

Exercise: [Exercise Answer] minutes
Sleep: [Sleep Answer] hours
Screen Time: [Screen Time Answer] hours
Mood: [Mood Answer]
Use the Magic Variables from each answer to insert the correct values.
Tutorial Step 9: Save to Notes (Created Earlier)
- Add Append to Text.
- Choose the note: Healthy Habits Tracker
- Make sure the text from Step 8 is selected as the content to append.
Tutorial Step 10: Add a Final Message
- Add Show Notification.
- Type: Great Job! Your healthy habits have been recorded.
A finished/completed Shortcuts will look like this:
Student Testing Task
Students run the Shortcut once using sample data. They check whether the note records:
- Date
- Water intake
- Exercise
- Sleep
- Screen time
- Mood
Step 3: Explore (10 minutes)
Students then discuss:
"What makes a healthy lifestyle?"
Possible answers:
- Exercise
- Healthy eating
- Good sleep
- Drinking water
- Positive emotions
- Limiting screen time
Teacher introduces self-monitoring as a strategy for building healthy habits.
Step 4: Elaborate (15 minutes)
Next, introduce Apple Shortcuts as a personal wellness assistant.
Activity: Create Your Healthy Habits Tracker
Working in pairs, students perform the followings:
- Build the Shortcut.
- Test it by entering sample data.
- Check that the information is saved correctly.
- Personalise the Shortcut with an icon and colour.
Teacher encourages students to add an extra question of their choice, such as:
- Did you eat breakfast today?
- How many servings of fruits and vegetables did you eat?
- Did you spend time outdoors today?
Step 5: Evaluate (10 minutes)
Students present one interesting finding from their data, for example:
"I noticed I felt happier on days when I exercised."
"I slept less on nights when I used my phone for a long time."
Teacher facilitates a discussion on how small changes can improve long-term health.
Why This Lesson Works
This lesson makes health education authentic by using Apple Shortcuts to automate daily habit tracking. Students collect real-life data on their water intake, exercise, sleep, and screen time, helping them make informed decisions about their well-being.
At the same time, they develop digital literacy, computational thinking, and data analysis skills while learning how technology can support healthy lifestyle choices. By using native Apple apps, the activity is engaging, practical, and easy to implement in any classroom.
How could a simple Apple Shortcut help your students become more aware of their daily habits and inspire healthier lifestyle choices? Try this activity in your classroom and share how your learners use automation to build lifelong healthy routines.
